18 Annoying Cartoon Characters

Author: Tyler B Updated: June 20, 2024

The most annoying cartoon characters of all time include Elmyra Duff, Caillou, Scrappy-Doo, Pearl Krabs, and Angelica Pickles, the kind of characters who do not just get on your nerves, they move in and start yelling catchphrases at full volume.

Sometimes it is the voice. Sometimes it is the entitlement. Sometimes it is the pure “why are you making every situation worse on purpose?” energy. And yet I still remember every single one of them, which is the frustrating magic of animation. If you like lists like this, you will probably also enjoy my deep dives into grumpy cartoon characters and even bully cartoon characters, because annoyance comes in many flavors.

Quick note: this is subjective. If your favorite is on here, I am not saying they are bad. I am saying they are professionally irritating.

  1. Elmyra Duff
  2. Caillou
  3. All the Angry Birds
  4. Darla (Finding Nemo)
  5. Princess Morbucks
  6. D.W. Read
  7. Nermal
  8. SwaySway
  9. The Emojis (Emoji Movie)
  10. Pearl Krabs
  11. Dee Dee
  12. Drizella Tremaine
  13. Angelica Pickles
  14. Bendy
  15. Mr. Frond
  16. Scrappy-Doo
  17. Snarf
  18. Diego

Elmyra Duff

😵 Annoying level: 9/10

🎭 Annoyance type: “I love you!” (while accidentally causing harm)

🧠 My take: The reason I flinch when cartoon characters go in for a hug

Elmyra is that specific kind of cartoon chaos where “affection” becomes a full-contact sport. The smile never drops, the volume never lowers, and the animals never, ever get a break.

Caillou

😵 Annoying level: 8/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Whining plus an endless “why?” loop

🧠 My take: If you have ever babysat, Caillou feels a little too real

Caillou is basically a stress test for parents. He is not evil, just relentlessly fussy, and the show leans hard into that “constant learning moment” energy that gets exhausting fast. (Side note: if you are into how kids’ media affects behavior, I have also written about how cartoons shape children.)

All of the Angry Birds

The Angry Birds characters from Angry Birds Toons

😵 Annoying level: 9/10

🎭 Annoyance type: One-note yelling plus constant chaos

🧠 My take: The game worked, the cartoons felt like extra homework

I get why Angry Birds took off as a game. But as full characters with nonstop “bits,” it can feel like the same gag repeated over and over at different volumes.

Darla (Finding Nemo)

😵 Annoying level: 9/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Loud-kid energy plus “poor fish” panic

🧠 My take: If you have ever had braces, the dentist scene hits different

Finding Nemo is still one of my favorite animated movies, but Darla is specifically engineered to spike your blood pressure. She is basically a jump scare in pigtails. If you are collecting more fish-related films, I have a full list here: animated movies about fish.

Princess Morbucks (The Powerpuff Girls)

Princess Morbucks from The Powerpuff Girls looking smug and spoiled

😵 Annoying level: 8/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Entitled plus “I should be included!”

🧠 My take: What happens when spoiled meets supervillain ambition

Princess Morbucks does not want to be a Powerpuff Girl because she is brave or heroic. She wants the spotlight. And her tantrums feel like they last an entire commercial break.

D.W. Read (Arthur)

D.W. Read from Arthur smiling mischievously

😵 Annoying level: 7/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Little-sibling sabotage

🧠 My take: She is annoying because she is accurate

D.W. is that perfectly written little sister who knows exactly which button to press. She can be genuinely funny, right up until she is getting Arthur blamed for something again.

Nermal (Garfield)

😵 Annoying level: 7/10

🎭 Annoyance type: “I’m cuter than you” smugness

🧠 My take: Garfield’s hatred is completely understandable

Nermal is adorable, which somehow makes him worse. He weaponizes cuteness and acts like he is doing everyone a favor just by existing. If you are a Garfield fan, I keep a whole character guide here: Garfield characters.

SwaySway (Breadwinners)

SwaySway from Breadwinners wearing a blue cap and acting hyper

😵 Annoying level: 7/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Loud, impulsive, never stops

🧠 My take: “Chaotic good” after six energy drinks

He is loud, he is constant, and he is the kind of character who turns a simple errand into a full disaster arc. (Also: yes, he is absolutely a big head cartoon character.)

The Emojis (The Emoji Movie)

Characters from The Emoji Movie in Textopolis

😵 Annoying level: 9/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Forced jokes plus “fellow kids” dialogue

🧠 My take: I want to un-watch this movie with science

I do not even blame the emojis. I blame the entire concept. If you want a companion list for “what went wrong,” I also have: worst cartoons.

Pearl Krabs (SpongeBob SquarePants)

😵 Annoying level: 9/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Teen drama plus yelling

🧠 My take: Pearl feels like a megaphone with feelings

Pearl is basically “teenage angst” turned into a whale who lives with Mr. Krabs. In a show absolutely full of loud characters, she still manages to stand out. If you are in SpongeBob mode, here are two easy rabbit holes: Pearl Krabs and SpongeBob SquarePants characters.

Dee Dee (Dexter’s Laboratory)

Dee Dee from Dexter's Laboratory dancing and ruining experiments

😵 Annoying level: 8/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Accidental sabotage

🧠 My take: Pure chaos, but she genuinely loves Dexter, which saves her

Dee Dee ruins everything, constantly, with the confidence of someone who has never once faced a consequence. But she is also funny enough that I cannot fully hate her. It is the classic “annoying sibling” curse.

Drizella Tremaine (Cinderella)

Drizella Tremaine from Disney's Cinderella looking smug and mean

😵 Annoying level: 8/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Mean plus jealous plus zero self-awareness

🧠 My take: Awful in the most classic Disney way

Drizella is the kind of character who makes you appreciate Cinderella’s superhuman patience. If you enjoy Disney character deep dives, this pairs well with my list of ugly Disney characters, since a lot of those designs are intentionally grating and it works.

Angelica Pickles (Rugrats)

Angelica Pickles from Rugrats smirking like a bossy bully

😵 Annoying level: 9/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Bossy bully plus manipulation

🧠 My take: The villain of childhood, and that is exactly why she is iconic

Angelica is essentially a tiny corporate manager who discovered she can control toddlers. If you want a full breakdown, I have one here: Angelica Pickles.

Bendy (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends)

Bendy from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends acting dramatic

😵 Annoying level: 8/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Fake tears plus blame-shifting

🧠 My take: The character you cannot argue with because he will cry mid-sentence

Bendy is a professional victim. Even when he is very clearly the problem, he somehow manages to make everyone else look guilty.

Mr. Frond (Bob’s Burgers)

Mr. Frond from Bob's Burgers, an awkward guidance counselor

😵 Annoying level: 7/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Well-meaning incompetence (and the glasses to match)

🧠 My take: He tries so hard and still makes it worse

Mr. Frond is annoying because he genuinely thinks he is helping, but his “guidance counselor wisdom” tends to create brand-new problems. Louise running circles around him does not help either.

Scrappy-Doo (Scooby-Doo)

Scrappy-Doo from Scooby-Doo posing confidently

😵 Annoying level: 9/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Overconfident plus loud plus “let me at ’em!”

🧠 My take: He turned every mystery into a screaming contest

Scrappy-Doo is one of the most divisive cartoon characters ever made. Some people love his bravado. I mostly remember the volume.

Snarf (ThunderCats)

😵 Annoying level: 7/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Constant worry plus complaining

🧠 My take: A walking “I told you so,” but a loyal one

Snarf stresses out in advance about absolutely everything. But I will give him credit: when it is actually time to show up, he shows up.

Diego (Dora the Explorer)

😵 Annoying level: 6/10

🎭 Annoyance type: Side character who takes over the screen

🧠 My take: I do not hate Diego, I just remember people being weirdly tired of him

Diego lands on “annoying” lists mostly because he is suddenly everywhere once he shows up, and the show leans hard on repeated educational phrases. He is not the worst here, but he is definitely a “your mileage may vary” pick.

What Makes a Cartoon Character Annoying?

After ranking all of these, a few patterns jump out. The most annoying cartoon characters almost always share at least one of these traits:

  • The voice: a grating, repetitive, or shrieky voice does most of the work. Caillou, Scrappy, and Pearl all qualify.
  • The entitlement: spoiled characters who think the world owes them something, like Princess Morbucks and Angelica.
  • The chaos: loud, impulsive characters who make every situation worse, like SwaySway and Dee Dee.
  • The manipulation: the fake-crying, blame-shifting types like Bendy who are impossible to argue with.

FAQ: Why Are Some Cartoon Characters So Annoying?

Why do annoying cartoon characters exist?

Because they work. Loud, repetitive, over-the-top characters are easy to remember, easy to write jokes around, and they create conflict instantly. A lot of these characters are basically plot accelerators.

Who is the most annoying cartoon character?

It is subjective, but Scrappy-Doo, Elmyra Duff, and Caillou are the names that come up most often. The Emoji Movie also gets a special mention for annoying an entire generation at once.

Who are the most annoying girl cartoon characters?

Angelica Pickles, Pearl Krabs, Princess Morbucks, D.W. Read, and Dee Dee top most lists, usually for some mix of bossiness, tantrums, or accidental chaos.

Which annoying characters are known for their voices?

Caillou, Scrappy-Doo, and Pearl Krabs are the classic “it is the voice” picks. A grating or shrieky voice does a lot of the heavy lifting for an annoying character.

Is it bad if a character annoys me?

Not at all. In most cases the annoyance is fully intentional. Some of the best animated writing builds characters who are irritating in a way that is still entertaining.
