Waffle From Catscratch: The Lovable Goofball Cat

Author: Tyler B Updated: June 7, 2025
3.2K

Waffle from Catscratch is what happens when pure joy gets turned into a cartoon cat and then handed a newt obsession.

He is tall, goofy, endlessly cheerful, and somehow operating on a completely different emotional operating system than everyone else in the room.

And honestly? Good for him.

While Mr. Blik is busy acting like a tiny billionaire dictator and Gordon is trying to keep the household from imploding, Waffle is usually off somewhere being fascinated by bubble wrap, newts, fingers, imaginary donut trees, or whatever new thought just wandered into his brain wearing tap shoes.

That is not an insult. That is a brand.

Who Is Waffle From Catscratch?

Waffle is one of the three main cat brothers from Nickelodeon’s Catscratch.

He is the youngest brother, an American Curl cat, and the most innocent, joyful, and gloriously strange member of the trio.

After inheriting a huge fortune from their late owner, Waffle, Mr. Blik, and Gordon move into the Cramdilly Mansion and immediately prove that giving three cats unlimited money was a bold social experiment.

Waffle stands out because he is not obsessed with power, status, or dignity.

He just wants fun, friendship, newts, and maybe a world where rollercoasters count as public transportation.

Which, frankly, I would vote for.

Quick Waffle breakdown:

  • Show: Catscratch
  • Species: American Curl cat
  • Age: 14
  • Birthday: July 9, 1993
  • Sex: Male
  • Residence: The Cramdilly Mansion
  • Known for: Newts, optimism, silliness, innocence, and wonderfully bizarre logic

The Catscratch Waffle character works because he brings softness and absurdity to the show.

He is not trying to dominate like Blik or act refined like Gordon. Waffle is just Waffle.

And Waffle being Waffle is usually enough to derail the entire episode.

Waffle’s Endearing Personality Traits

Waffle is beloved because he has the kind of enthusiasm most of us lose somewhere between tax forms and waiting on hold.

He is curious about everything. And I mean everything.

Revolving doors? Fascinating.

Bubble wrap? Life-changing.

Newts? Basically a religion.

Waffle’s personality is built around innocent wonder.

He sees the world like a playground where every object might be magical if he stares at it long enough.

His love for his teddy bear, Teddy, also shows his soft-hearted side. Waffle is silly, but he is not empty-headed in a cold way. He is sweet, emotional, and deeply attached to the things he loves.

That makes his weirdness feel warm instead of random.

Why I think Waffle is so lovable:

  • He is genuinely optimistic: Waffle rarely lets the world crush his spirit.
  • He is endlessly curious: the smallest things can amaze him.
  • He is emotionally soft: his teddy bear and newt obsession show his gentle side.
  • He creates comedy naturally: his misunderstandings lead to some of the show’s funniest moments.
  • He balances his brothers: his innocence softens Blik and Gordon’s stronger personalities.

In short, Waffle is not trying to be funny. He just is funny.

That is the best kind of cartoon goofball.

A Brotherly Dynamic

Waffle from Catscratch with his brothers Mr. Blik and Gordon

The relationship between Waffle, Mr. Blik, and Gordon is the heart of Catscratch.

Or maybe the engine.

Or maybe the blender, because these three personalities should not work together as well as they do.

Waffle looks up to Mr. Blik, even when Blik is being bossy, rude, selfish, or acting like he personally invented leadership.

That admiration gives their relationship a funny sweetness.

Blik gets annoyed with Waffle constantly, but there is still affection under the insults.

Gordon, meanwhile, is more nurturing with Waffle. He often protects him, indulges him, and handles his chaos with more patience than I personally would have after the third newt-related incident.

Waffle brings out different sides of both brothers.

  • With Mr. Blik, Waffle becomes the admiring little brother who somehow survives constant bossiness.
  • With Gordon, Waffle gets more warmth, protection, and patience.
  • With both, Waffle creates chaos that forces the brothers to work together.

That sibling dynamic is why the trio works.

They fight, misunderstand each other, annoy each other, and still remain family.

Very realistic, except most siblings do not live in a mansion after inheriting a fortune.

Most.

Waffle Catscratch Personality

Waffle Catscratch personality with joyful expression

The Waffle Catscratch personality is basically sunshine in a gray tabby body.

He is enthusiastic, clueless, spontaneous, and completely committed to whatever strange thought has captured his attention that minute.

Waffle can speak Newtuguese, the language of his beloved newts, which is exactly the kind of character detail that makes me say, “Yes, this is why cartoons exist.”

He loves newts so much that it becomes a core part of his identity.

Some characters have hobbies.

Waffle has a tiny amphibian-based worldview.

His optimism is relentless. Even when things are confusing, dangerous, or obviously going wrong, Waffle often barrels forward with a smile and the confidence of someone who has not fully processed the situation.

That could be a flaw.

In Waffle’s case, it is also his superpower.

Things Waffle loves or finds fascinating:

  • Newts
  • The “newt god”
  • Teddy, his favorite teddy bear
  • Bubble wrap
  • Revolving doors
  • Fingers
  • Zero-gravity basketball
  • Imaginary donut trees
  • Flower pictures printed on shirts
  • The Monkey-Cat hybrid gag

That list reads like a dream journal from a cartoon cat, and I would not change a thing.

The Gear Comic

Waffle from Gear and Catscratch with perky ears

Before Catscratch, Waffle appeared in Gear, and his core personality was already there.

The transition from Gear to Catscratch did not erase what made him lovable.

He remained the silly, gentle, fun-loving goofball with a strange connection to small aquatic creatures.

In Gear, Waffle loved guppies instead of newts.

So yes, the species changed, but the spiritual mission remained the same: Waffle must adore tiny creatures and confuse everyone around him.

In Gear, Waffle dreams of living in a cozy cabin in the woods beside a pond filled with guppies.

That is actually kind of sweet.

We should all be so emotionally clear about our dream lifestyle.

What I like about this version of Waffle is that his gentleness was always part of the character.

He was never just “the dumb one.”

He was the soft one. The strange one. The one who sees value in things everyone else dismisses.

That is why he works.

Catscratch – Waffle World

Waffle World is exactly the kind of episode concept that fits him.

Because of course Waffle’s imagination deserves its own world.

Honestly, I’m surprised reality can contain him at all.

When the show leans into Waffle’s perspective, it gets some of its most playful comedy. His logic is not normal logic, but it is consistent in its own weird way.

Waffle sees the world differently, and that difference is what makes him funny.

He does not need to be clever in the traditional sense. His comedy comes from innocence, surprise, and a total lack of embarrassment.

That is powerful.

What Kind of Cat Is Waffle From Catscratch?

Waffle from Catscratch is identified as an American Curl cat.

That makes sense visually because American Curl cats are known for their distinctive curled ears, and Waffle’s ears are one of his defining features.

He has mostly gray tabby fur, pale white feet, and blue stripes around his long tail and left ear. His black, puppy-dog eyes give him a permanently innocent look, which is dangerous because it makes his chaos harder to stay mad at.

He also has a tuft of fur on his chest and is the tallest of the three brothers.

So visually, Waffle is:

  • Tall
  • Gray tabby-like
  • Curled-eared
  • Wide-eyed and innocent-looking
  • Marked with blue stripe details

The blue stripe details help him stand out from his brothers and give his design a fun cartoon punch.

His design matches his personality perfectly: soft, odd, expressive, and impossible to mistake for anyone else.

Why Waffle Still Stands Out

Waffle stands out because he is pure cartoon joy.

Not every character needs to be sharp, sarcastic, rich, powerful, or emotionally complicated enough to require a corkboard and string.

Sometimes a character can just be happy, weird, and obsessed with newts.

That is enough.

Why I think Waffle works so well:

  • He is instantly lovable: his innocence makes him easy to root for.
  • He balances the trio: Blik brings ego, Gordon brings warmth, and Waffle brings chaos sunshine.
  • He has a distinct identity: newts, Teddy, Newtuguese, and his strange interests make him memorable.
  • His design is strong: curled ears, gray fur, blue stripes, and big eyes all help him pop.
  • He creates natural comedy: his misunderstandings and enthusiasm drive many funny moments.

For me, Waffle is the kind of character who makes a show feel warmer.

Even when he causes problems, it usually comes from curiosity or excitement rather than malice.

That matters.

Final Thoughts

Waffle from Catscratch is one of Nickelodeon’s most lovable cartoon goofballs.

He is sweet, strange, energetic, clueless, and completely committed to enjoying the world in his own bizarre way.

His love of newts, his teddy bear, his innocent outlook, and his brotherly bond with Mr. Blik and Gordon make him more than just the silly one.

He is the heart of the trio.

Or at least the part of the trio most likely to smell a flower printed on a shirt and think he discovered nature.

And honestly, I wouldn’t have him any other way.

Now I’m curious: was Waffle your favorite Catscratch character, or did Mr. Blik or Gordon steal the show for you?
