Dracula Cartoons: 9 Must Watch Animated Vampire Picks

Author: Tyler B Updated: July 19, 2023

Let’s talk Dracula cartoons. The must watch list includes Castlevania, Hotel Transylvania, The Little Vampire, Vampires in Havana, and the legendary Count Duckula. And yes, I’m going to defend Count Duckula to anyone who will listen.

For decades, Dracula has been one of animation’s favorite obsessions. The cape. The accent. The dramatic entrance. The man has serviceable PR for someone who allegedly drinks human blood. Honestly, I get it. He’s a great character.

The Bram Stoker novel kicked it all off back in 1897. Count Dracula moves from Transylvania to England, planning to spread his curse of the undead. Then Professor Abraham Van Helsing and his crew step in to stop him. Bram Stoker’s original novel set the template that nearly every animated Dracula since has played with, reinvented, or completely flipped on its head.

In this post, I’m going through the best Dracula cartoons across kids shows, family movies, anime adjacent series, and the occasional adult animation. Something for every mood. From “spooky vibes with my kid on Halloween” to “intense Netflix binge at 1am.”

Dracula Cartoon TV Shows and Movies Worth Watching

It doesn’t matter if you’re a horror fan or just here for the animation side of things. The world of Count Dracula has range. Comedy. Action. Romance. Existential dread. Sometimes all in one episode.

Buckle in. Let’s get into the list.

Count Duckula (1988 to 1993)

Count Duckula - classic animated Dracula cartoon

Count Duckula is the most British thing on this list. And I love it for that. The show ran from 1988 to 1993 and started as a spin-off from a Danger Mouse episode, which is honestly a wild origin story.

The premise is simple. Count Duckula is a vegetarian vampire duck. Yes, you read that right. He gets accidentally resurrected by Igor, the loyal hunchback assistant of the original Count Dracula, who was definitely not trying to revive a tomato loving pacifist.

The whole series follows Duckula trying (and mostly failing) to resist his vampire instincts. It’s silly. It’s clever. It’s absurdly British. Easily one of the most underrated animated Dracula movies and shows ever made.

Castlevania (2017 to 2022)

Castlevania - Netflix animated Dracula series

If Count Duckula is the silliest entry on this list, Castlevania is the most serious. This is the adult animated Netflix series based on the iconic video game franchise. Produced by Frederator Studios. Written by Warren Ellis. Genuinely beautiful animation.

The first season follows Trevor Belmont as he gets pulled into a brutal war between humans and supernatural forces. Dracula here isn’t a goofy cape wearing icon. He’s a grieving, terrifying, fully realized villain. Possibly the best animated version of him ever put to screen.

If you only watch one Dracula cartoon on this list, make it Castlevania. Just maybe not in front of the kids.

Hotel Transylvania: The Series (2017 to 2021)

Hotel Transylvania The Series Disney Channel

“Hotel Transylvania: The Series” premiered on Disney Channel in 2017. It’s the animated TV continuation of the popular Hotel Transylvania film franchise. Same world. Same vibe. More episodic adventures.

The series centers on Count Dracula’s daughter Mavis and her friends as they navigate growing up inside a hotel built for monsters. Frankenstein’s Monster. The Invisible Man. The Mummy. They all show up at some point.

It’s lighter than the movies and clearly aimed at younger viewers. But if your kids loved the films, the show absolutely delivers.

The Little Vampire (2017 to 2018)

The Little Vampire animated kids Dracula series

“The Little Vampire” is a British and German co-production that ran for one season from 2017 to 2018. It’s based on the book series by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg, which means there’s actual source material doing the heavy lifting.

The story follows Tony Thompson, a totally ordinary kid in Scotland who befriends a vampire named Rudolph. The two of them try to figure out how to give Rudolph and his family their humanity back. Cute concept. Surprisingly emotional moments.

A good pick for younger viewers who want spooky vibes without anything too intense.

Monster Family (2017)

Monster Family 2017 animated Dracula movie

Monster Family is a 2017 German and British computer animated fantasy comedy. Directed by Holger Tappe. Based on the children’s book “Happy Family” by David Safier. Solid pedigree on this one.

The plot? A regular family (the Wishbones) gets transformed into monsters thanks to a witch’s curse. Dad becomes Frankenstein’s Monster. Mom becomes a vampire. The kids turn into a werewolf and a mummy. And then they have to figure out how to live with it.

It’s a kids vampire movie wrapped inside a “learn to appreciate your family” lesson. The Dracula elements are real, but it’s more “monster comedy” than “horror.” Light, fun, and pretty rewatchable.

Vampires in Havana (1985)

Vampires in Havana 1985 Cuban Dracula cartoon

This one is a real hidden gem. Vampires in Havana is a 1985 Cuban animated film set in (you guessed it) Havana. It follows a vampire named Don Cristobal who is in love with a human woman named Rosa. Romance complications. Vampire politics. Comedy.

The whole thing is essentially a satire of classic Dracula movies, mixed with jazz, Cuban culture, and a healthy amount of weird animation choices. It was a big commercial hit in Cuba and Latin America, and it got nominated for the Ariel award for best animated film.

If you want a Dracula cartoon that almost nobody else has seen, start here. It’s wild.

Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire (2003)

Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire animated movie

You knew this one was coming. The Mystery Inc. crew (Scooby, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, Fred) head to Australia for a music festival. Naturally, a vampire legend tied to Dracula starts wreaking havoc. Naturally, they have to solve it.

Featuring the voice talents of Frank Welker, Mindy Cohn, Grey DeLisle, and Matthew Lillard, this is exactly what you’d expect from a Scooby-Doo movie. Mystery, masks, meddling kids. Plus a few legitimately spooky moments.

A great pick if you want a kid friendly entry on the list.

The Batman vs. Dracula (2005)

The Batman vs Dracula 2005 animated film

The Batman vs. Dracula is a 2005 direct to video animated superhero horror film from Warner Bros. Animation. Directed by Michael Goguen. Written by Michael Reaves and Steven Melching.

The plot is exactly what the title promises. Dracula shows up in Gotham, plans to turn the whole city into vampires, and Batman has to stop him. That’s it. That’s the pitch. And it absolutely rips.

This one is genuinely darker than most superhero animation from its era. If you’ve never seen it, you’re missing one of the best matchups in animated history. Bat versus Bat. Tonally perfect.

Dear Dracula (2012)

Dear Dracula kids vampire movie animated

Dear Dracula is the wholesome one on this list. A young boy named Sam is obsessed with monsters, especially Dracula. So he writes a letter to the Count asking for a Dracula action figure for Halloween.

Plot twist? Dracula actually shows up. The two of them go on a small adventure. Sam learns about friendship and confidence. Dracula remembers what it’s like to be young again. It’s basically Hallmark with fangs, and it works.

If you want a soft, kid friendly kids Dracula cartoon for Halloween night, this is the move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the most famous cartoon Dracula character?

Two names come up every single time. Count Dracula from Hotel Transylvania (voiced by Adam Sandler) and Count von Count from Sesame Street.

Sandler’s version is a loving dad, the owner of Hotel Transylvania, and basically the friendliest vampire ever animated. He’s charming, witty, and the emotional anchor of the entire franchise.

Count von Count is the other side of the coin. Purple skin. Black cape. Pure obsession with counting. “Ah ah ah!” lives rent free in millions of childhood memories. He taught a couple of generations how to count without anyone even realizing it was educational. Sneaky genius character design.

Who are the most popular vampire cartoon characters?

The list is honestly stacked. Some of the most popular animated vampires include:

  • Marceline the Vampire Queen from Adventure Time
  • Alucard from Hellsing
  • Vlad Plasmius from Danny Phantom
  • Dracula from Castlevania
  • Count Dracula from Hotel Transylvania
  • Simon Belmont from Captain N: The Game Master
  • The vampires from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
  • Barnabas Collins from the animated Dark Shadows

Different vibes. Different shows. All iconic in their own way.

What is the most popular cartoon based on Dracula?

The most popular is probably the Hotel Transylvania franchise from Sony Pictures Animation. The first film came out in 2012, followed by Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015), Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018), and Transformania (2022). The whole series has been a commercial and critical win, and it launched the spin off TV show on Disney Channel too.

What is the best Dracula cartoon for kids?

For younger viewers, I’d go with Hotel Transylvania: The Series, The Little Vampire, or Dear Dracula. All three lean into the fun side of vampire stories without anything too scary.

What is the best Dracula cartoon for adults?

Hands down, Castlevania. Mature themes, gorgeous animation, and one of the best villain arcs in any animated series. It’s the Dracula adaptation horror fans have been waiting for.
