Let’s talk polar bear cartoon characters. Iorek Byrnison. ICEE Bear. Bernard. Bepo. Muk. Kallik. Ice Bear. There are way more iconic animated polar bears than you’d expect, and honestly, they cover the entire emotional range. Some are terrifying armored warriors. Some are gentle goofballs. Some sell soda for a living. Animation has done a lot with the polar bear shape.

From the freezing edges of the Arctic to the inside of a Coca-Cola commercial, polar bears have been padding into our screens for decades. White fur. Black eyes. Built for cold weather and big personalities. They’re one of the most recognizable animal silhouettes in animation, and animators love drawing them.

In this post, I’m walking through the best cartoon polar bears across anime, Disney, classic Hollywood, kids books, holiday ads, and modern Cartoon Network shows. Bundle up. Let’s get into it.

Famous Polar Bear Cartoon Characters Across Animation

11
Ice Bear (We Bare Bears)

Ice Bear - We Bare Bears

Ice Bear is the deadpan, third-person-speaking polar bear from Daniel Chong’s “We Bare Bears” on Cartoon Network. He’s the youngest of the three bear brothers. He carries a sword. He cooks. He builds robots. He never raises his voice. He is the coolest member of any animated family ever.

“Ice Bear is the best brother.” “Ice Bear has a Roomba named Roomba.” Every line he says is iconic. The show ran from 2015 to 2019 and Ice Bear singlehandedly became the most quotable polar bear cartoon character of his generation.

10
Iorek Byrnison (The Golden Compass / His Dark Materials)

Iorek Byrnison - The Golden Compass

Iorek Byrnison is the armored warrior polar bear (a Panserbjørne) from Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy. Massive. Intelligent. Capable of forging his own armor out of meteorite metal. Once a king, then exiled in disgrace, then redeemed through one of the best character arcs in modern fantasy.

In the 2007 animated adaptation, Iorek’s fight scenes are some of the most brutal and emotional in any kids’ film. The HBO live-action series gave him a stunning CGI update too. Easily the most powerful polar bear character ever written.

9
Bepo (One Piece)

Bepo - One Piece

Bepo is the navigator of the Heart Pirates in One Piece, captained by Trafalgar Law. He’s an anthropomorphic polar bear who practices kung fu, apologizes constantly even when he didn’t do anything wrong, and wears an orange jumpsuit that makes him look like a mascot.

He’s one of the rare polar bear characters in anime, and One Piece committed to the bit fully. He fights. He navigates. He says sorry a lot. He’s basically the best crewmate any pirate captain could ask for.

8
Coca-Cola Bear

Coca Cola Bear - Polar Bear Cartoons

The Coca-Cola Polar Bears are the holiday mascots that have been winning at Christmas advertising since 1993. Created by Ken Stewart, they’ve appeared in dozens of heartwarming commercials featuring ice skating, snowball fights, and family gatherings.

For a lot of millennials, these ads were a core part of the holiday season. The bears never speak. They don’t need to. The animation does all the work. Genuinely iconic cute polar bear cartoon mascots.

7
ICEE Bear

ICEE Bear - ICEE ads

ICEE Bear is the polar bear mascot of the ICEE frozen drink brand. Red hat. Blue scarf. Permanently cheerful. He’s been around since the 1960s, which makes him one of the longest-running polar bear mascots in advertising history.

If you grew up going to movie theaters, gas stations, or arcades in the US, this bear is permanently embedded in your brain. The man’s been selling frozen sugar water for over 60 years, and honestly, he’s still got it.

6
Lars (The Little Polar Bear)

Lars - The Little Polar Bear

Lars is the adventurous young polar bear from Hans de Beer’s “The Little Polar Bear” book series, first published in 1987. The books were eventually adapted into animated specials and films that became huge in Europe.

He travels far from his Arctic home, meets unlikely animal friends, and learns lessons about friendship, courage, and being kind to creatures who aren’t like you. A sweet, gentle series that holds up beautifully.

5
Bernard (Backkom)

Bernard - Polar Bears Cartoon

Bernard is the clumsy, curious polar bear from the wordless animated series of the same name. Also known as “Backkom” or “Backkom Bear” in South Korea. The show is produced by RG Animation Studios and has aired in dozens of countries.

The whole humor of the show comes from Bernard trying (and spectacularly failing) at everyday tasks. He attempts to ski. He attempts to fish. He attempts to fly. All of it ends in slapstick disaster. Pure visual comedy that works in any language.

4
Kallik (The Seekers Universe)

Kallik - The Seekers Universe

Kallik is one of the four young bears at the center of Erin Hunter’s “Seekers” book series. She’s the polar bear of the group, traveling alongside Lusa (a black bear), Toklo (a grizzly), and Ujurak (a shape-shifting grizzly).

After losing her mother, Kallik sets out to find her missing brother Taqqiq across the Arctic. Her arc is one of bravery, resilience, and survival in a harsh environment. A great character for any kid who liked Warriors but wanted more bears and less cats.

3
Muk and Luk (Balto)

Muk - Balto - Cartoon Polar Bear

Muk and Luk are the two clumsy polar bear brothers from the 1995 animated film “Balto.” They’re best friends with Boris the goose and provide the comic relief of the whole movie. One of them is afraid of water. The other can’t swim. They’re both adorable and useless in a crisis, which is somehow the perfect setup.

Their friendship with Balto adds real heart to a movie that’s already pretty emotional. If you grew up watching Balto on VHS, these two are permanently a part of your childhood whether you remember their names or not.

2
Leonard the Polar Bear (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie)

Leonard the Polar Bear - cute polar bear cartoon

Leonard is a supporting character in the 1998 animated film “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie.” He’s gentle. He’s kind. He befriends Rudolph during his journey and offers emotional support when Rudolph needs it most.

He’s not the most famous polar bear on this list. But Leonard represents that whole class of warm, supportive side characters who help the protagonist through their lowest moment. A good bear. Deserves more recognition.

1
Maxie the Polar Bear (Chilly Willy)

Maxie the Polar Bear - Chilly Willy

Maxie is the deep-voiced polar bear who recurs as an antagonist in the classic “Chilly Willy” shorts, which started airing in 1953. He’s voiced by the legendary Daws Butler (the voice of Yogi Bear, Snagglepuss, and basically half of mid-century animation).

Maxie isn’t really mean. He’s just slow on the uptake. Chilly Willy outsmarts him in nearly every episode, and Maxie keeps coming back for more punishment. Classic Hanna-Barbera-era cartoon energy.

Why Polar Bears Work So Well in Cartoons

There’s a reason animators keep coming back to the polar bear shape. The silhouette is instantly recognizable. The white fur stands out against any background. The big body and tiny ears give you a perfect mix of menace and cuteness. You can write them as scary warriors (Iorek), comic relief (Muk and Luk, Bernard), brand mascots (ICEE, Coca-Cola), or quiet badasses (Ice Bear). Same animal. Infinite emotional range.

The cold weather connection also gives them built-in storytelling potential. Arctic settings. Survival arcs. Holiday vibes. A polar bear character lets animators tap into a whole emotional landscape that other animals can’t quite reach.

That’s why polar bear cartoon characters show up across so many genres and decades. They’re versatile. They’re recognizable. And they’re really, really fun to draw.
