Let’s talk chicken cartoon characters. Foghorn Leghorn. Heihei. Chicken Little. Ginger from Chicken Run. Lady Kluck. Torchic. Rocky. Alan-a-Dale. There are way more iconic animated chickens than you’d think. Honestly, chickens might be the most underrated bird in animation history.
From Foghorn Leghorn’s southern drawl to the entire cast of Chicken Run, these feathery characters have been entertaining audiences for almost a hundred years. Some are heroes. Some are sidekicks. Some are villains. And one is a literal cyborg with a vendetta. Hollywood really has done a lot with chickens.
In this post, I’m walking through my favorite famous chicken cartoon characters across Disney, Looney Tunes, Pixar, Aardman, Pokemon, Family Guy, and even cereal mascots. Settle in. This is a big one.
Famous Chicken Cartoon Characters You’ll Always Remember
Foghorn Leghorn (Looney Tunes)

First appearance: Walky Talky Hawky (1946) | Creator: Robert McKimson | Franchise: Looney Tunes
Foghorn Leghorn is the granddaddy of all chicken cartoon characters. Tall. Loud. Southern accent so thick you could spread it on toast. The character was created in 1946 and has somehow stayed iconic ever since.
His whole bit is that he’s overconfident, perpetually scheming, and constantly getting outsmarted by smaller characters like Henery Hawk. “I say, I say, boy” basically became a cultural catchphrase. The whole Looney Tunes franchise wouldn’t be the same without him.
Chicken (Cow and Chicken)

Chicken is exactly what you think. A chicken. Named Chicken. He’s the older brother of Cow in the wildly weird Cartoon Network series “Cow and Chicken” that ran from 1997 to 1999.
He’s sarcastic, cynical, and constantly trying to act like he’s too cool for Cow’s enthusiasm. Which never works, because the show is built on chaos. If you watched Cartoon Network in the late 90s, this duo lives somewhere in your memory whether you like it or not.
Heihei (Moana)

Heihei might be the dumbest animated chicken ever drawn. And I say that with deep love. The man stares at walls. Eats rocks. Falls into the ocean repeatedly. Disney literally built a whole running gag around how absent he is from reality.
But he’s also one of the best comic relief characters Disney has done in years. He somehow ends up on Moana’s boat, becomes part of the journey, and provides perfect chaos in nearly every scene. A truly committed performance from a bird with possibly two brain cells.
Chicken Little

Released: 2005 | Director: Mark Dindal | Based on: Henny Penny
Chicken Little is the underdog hero of his self-titled 2005 Disney film. He famously panics when an acorn hits him on the head and tells everyone the sky is falling. Naturally, the town never lets him hear the end of it.
Then real aliens show up. Now he has to save the town and somehow restore his reputation. The movie didn’t get the love it deserved at the time, but Chicken Little himself is a great character. Tiny. Brave. Wears giant glasses. He’s earned his place on this list.
Roy Rooster (Garfield & Friends)

Roy Rooster is one of the funniest side characters from the U.S. Acres segment of Garfield & Friends, which entertained audiences from 1988 to 1994. He’s loud. He’s a bit of a con artist. He plays the trumpet. He’s exactly what you’d expect from a sitcom rooster.
A solid pick if you’re looking for a deep cut from the classic Saturday morning era.
Lady Kluck (Robin Hood)

Lady Kluck is one of the best Disney chicken cartoon characters. She’s Maid Marian’s lady-in-waiting in the 1973 animated Robin Hood, and she absolutely steals the show. Scottish accent. Plump. Hilarious. Also? She tackles rhinos like a linebacker during the climactic jousting tournament.
If you forgot how iconic she is, the football scene alone is reason enough to rewatch the movie.
Bunty (Chicken Run)

Bunty is the bossy, no-nonsense, slightly judgmental hen at Tweedy’s Farm. She doubts every escape plan. She complains about every idea. She thinks Ginger is being ridiculous most of the time. And yet, she shows up when it matters.
Every group of friends has a Bunty. Don’t pretend you don’t.
Ginger (Chicken Run)

Ginger is the brave, determined, fiercely smart leader of the Chicken Run escape. She refuses to accept the farm life. She refuses to be made into a pie. And she basically pulls off the greatest poultry prison break in cinematic history.
If chicken cartoon characters had a Mount Rushmore, Ginger would be on it. Aardman knew what they were doing.
Camilla the Chicken (The Muppets)

Camilla is the longtime girlfriend of Gonzo the Great. Yes, Gonzo (a small blue creature of indeterminate species) is dating a chicken. It’s been canon since the 70s. Love wins.
She’s sweet, loyal, and a fan favorite among Muppets fans. She also has the distinction of being one of the only Muppets in a committed long-term relationship with another Muppet. Power couple energy.
Torchic (Pokemon)

Type: Fire | Evolves to: Combusken | Ability: Blaze
Torchic is the fire chick Pokemon and one of the three Gen 3 starters from Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Tiny. Yellow. Adorable. Also: shoots flames from its beak. Eventually evolves into Blaziken, which is a fully bipedal fighting rooster that could win a UFC match.
Honestly, the most upgraded chicken in animation history. Iconic starter choice.
Rocky (Chicken Run)

Rocky is the Rhode Island Red rooster who crash-lands at Tweedy’s Farm and gets recruited as a “flying coach” for the chickens. Plot twist: he can’t actually fly. He was shot out of a circus cannon. The man is a fraud.
But he eventually steps up, helps Ginger lead the escape, and becomes a real hero by the end. Voiced by Mel Gibson with full charm mode activated.
Alan-a-Dale (Robin Hood)

Alan-a-Dale is the lute-playing rooster narrator of Disney’s 1973 Robin Hood. He sings most of the soundtrack. He delivers the entire framing device. He’s basically responsible for half the personality of the film.
Voiced by Roger Miller, his songs (“Oo-De-Lally,” “Not in Nottingham”) are still in my head decades later. Top-tier Disney chicken cartoon character.
Sheldon (Garfield)

Sheldon is a chick who never fully hatched. He just walks around in his lower eggshell, legs sticking out the bottom, fully committed to the bit. Honestly one of the funniest visual gags in the entire Garfield universe.
He shows up in the U.S. Acres comic strip and the TV adaptations. Small, weird, oddly philosophical. A great deep-cut chicken character.
Miss Prissy (Looney Tunes)

Miss Prissy is the spinster widow hen who Foghorn Leghorn has been awkwardly courting since the 1950s. Tall. Bonnet. Slightly bashful. Southern as sweet tea.
She’s basically the only character who can get Foghorn to slow down for five seconds. Their dynamic is half romance, half slapstick, and entirely a product of mid-century cartoon writing.
Panchito Pistoles (The Three Caballeros)

First appearance: The Three Caballeros (1944) | Studio: Walt Disney
Panchito is the high-energy Mexican rooster who teams up with Donald Duck and José Carioca in Disney’s 1944 musical film The Three Caballeros. Sombrero. Pistols. A voice that could fill a stadium.
He’s been around for 80+ years and still shows up in Disney media occasionally. One of the earliest Disney chicken cartoon characters and still one of the most fun.
Babs (Chicken Run)

Babs is the soft-spoken, knitting-obsessed chicken who somehow manages to be the most consistently funny character in Chicken Run. She’s always carrying around her yarn and needles. She’s always saying things that completely miss the point. She’s perfect.
“Are the trees in Scotland prickly?” is one of my favorite throwaway lines in animation. That’s a Babs line. She’s a treasure.
Chickaletta (PAW Patrol)

Chickaletta is Mayor Goodway’s pet chicken in PAW Patrol. She lives in a purse. She is constantly getting into trouble. She is essentially the entire reason half the rescue missions even happen.
If you have a small child, you have heard the name Chickaletta said with great enthusiasm. She’s iconic to a very specific demographic and earns her spot on this list.
Gyro Gearloose (DuckTales)

Gyro Gearloose is Disney’s famous anthropomorphic chicken inventor. Long neck. Tall hat. Tiny lightbulb sidekick. He’s the genius behind half the gadgets in DuckTales, both the 1987 original and the 2017 reboot.
A great example of a chicken character whose species is barely the point. The man builds robots. He invents devices that defy physics. The fact that he happens to be a chicken is honestly just a fun detail.
Ernie the Giant Chicken (Family Guy)

Ernie is the recurring giant chicken on Family Guy whose decade-long beef with Peter Griffin has produced some of the longest, most ridiculous fight scenes in animated TV history. Three of these brawls have crossed into multiple cities. One of them included a plane crash.
It’s absurd. It’s committed. It’s iconic. Ernie is a legend.
Chanticleer (Rock-a-Doodle)

Chanticleer is the Elvis-inspired rock-and-roll rooster from Don Bluth’s 1991 musical Rock-a-Doodle. Voiced by the late Glen Campbell. Massive pompadour. Sequined jumpsuit. Makes the sun rise with his voice. Iconic premise.
The movie is a weird Don Bluth fever dream. Chanticleer himself is unforgettable.
Robot Chicken

Creators: Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, Mike Fasolo | First aired: 2005
The Robot Chicken from Adult Swim’s stop-motion sketch show is technically the title character of the whole series. Hit by a car. Resurrected by a mad scientist. Forced to watch endless TV channels that produce all the sketches.
It’s grim. It’s hilarious. The show has been running since 2005 and shows no signs of stopping. A genuinely iconic chicken in modern animation.
Cornelius (Kellogg’s Corn Flakes)

Cornelius is the Kellogg’s Corn Flakes mascot, and he’s been the face of breakfast cereal since 1957. Green body. Red comb. Confident posture. Basically the most recognizable rooster in advertising history.
Yes, he’s a cereal mascot. But he’s still a chicken cartoon character and he’s been animated in commercials for almost 70 years, so I’m counting him.
Goldie (Rock-a-Doodle)

Goldie is the singer hen and Chanticleer’s love interest in Rock-a-Doodle. She starts off as a rival, falls for him, and gets the classic “feathered romance arc” treatment.
Another Don Bluth weirdo. I’m here for it.
Buck Cluck (Chicken Little)

Buck Cluck is Chicken Little’s dad. He’s a former high school baseball star who is honestly not great at the whole “supportive parent” thing for most of the movie. The dad arc is half the film’s emotional weight, and Buck eventually gets it right.
A good reminder that even side chickens can carry meaningful character development.
Fowler (Chicken Run)

Fowler is the grumpy old British RAF veteran rooster at Tweedy’s Farm. Constantly talking about his glory days in the war. Constantly skeptical of everyone’s plans. Eventually proves his worth in the most satisfying way possible during the third act of Chicken Run.
A perfect side character. The “back in my day” energy is unmatched.
Drumstick (Diddy Kong Racing)

Drumstick is the rooster racer from the N64 classic Diddy Kong Racing. Wizpig turned him into a frog as part of the game’s lore. You unlock him as a playable character by finding the frog and getting the trophies. Pure 90s gaming nonsense.
He’s a chicken in a tracksuit who got cursed into amphibian form. Iconic.
