Lloyd in Space: A Toon Disney Classic

Author: Tyler B Updated: November 23, 2023
3.9K

Lloyd in Space was an American animated series created by Joe Ansolabehere and Paul Germain, the duo behind Recess. It debuted on ABC on February 3, 2001, as part of the network’s Saturday morning lineup, with a pilot written by Ansolabehere, Germain, and Mark Drop, and character designs by Eric Keyes. The show ran for four seasons before wrapping up on February 27, 2004.

If you remember the golden era of Saturday morning cartoons from the 70s, you will adore this one. It has sharp writing, storylines that actually pay off (unlike some shows I could name), and clean, vibrant animation that scratches a very specific nostalgic itch. Kudos to Disney, and here is hoping they revisit this kind of magic.

A Galactic Setting Like No Other

Disney's Lloyd In Space

When Disney ventures into animation, magic tends to follow, and Lloyd in Space is no exception. It transports us to the outer reaches of the universe, conjuring a world full of aliens, bustling space stations, and intergalactic adventures. Unlike most TV shows with their classic earthbound settings, this one drops viewers straight into the cosmos. What is not to love about a space-station school or a shopping trip to the moon? That setting fuels imaginative plots and invites you to dream, explore, and believe in the endless possibilities of a universe we have barely begun to map.

What Was Lloyd in Space About?

Disney's Lloyd In Space Cartoon

From the minds behind Recess came a futuristic series set shortly after the cataclysmic events of World War IX. It follows Lloyd Nebulon, a green-skinned Verdigrean alien with peculiar ears and a standout antenna, who lives aboard the Intrepidville Space Station alongside his psychically gifted sister Francine and their mother, Commander Norah Li Nebulon, who runs Intrepidville.

Joining Lloyd’s escapades are his pals: Eddie R. Horton, a red-haired human teen; Kurt Blobberts, a huge one-eyed purple blob from the Blobullons; and Douglas McNoggin, a walking, talking giant brain from the Cerebellians. The world is rounded out by characters like Station, the station’s AI; Mrs. Bolt, Lloyd’s stern robot teacher; and Brittany, Lloyd’s sought-after but haughty crush.

Relatable Characters in an Unreal World

Lloyd in Space Disney

For all its galactic trappings, the show’s trials and adventures hit surprisingly close to home. Lloyd, our green-skinned protagonist, faces the same old challenges of adolescence, just with a cosmic twist. Whether he is finding a date for the lunar dance, dealing with bullies, or sorting out family drama, his experiences are universally relatable. His circle of friends, each one distinct and vibrant, reflects the same diversity and camaraderie we recognize from our own world. Disney’s quiet reminder: wherever you come from, growing up is a shared experience.

Melding Humor With Profound Lessons

Lloyd in Space had a knack for blending humor with genuine lessons, entertaining and teaching at the same time. The comedy is clever, packed with puns and cultural references that land for kids and adults alike. One moment you are laughing at Eddie’s latest goof-up, the next you are mulling over a surprisingly thoughtful message. Themes of acceptance, friendship, responsibility, and the value of differences are woven in throughout, with the show quietly making the case that being different is a strength, not a weakness, and that real friendship crosses every barrier.

Success and Cancellation

Launched in early 2001 on Disney’s One Saturday Morning block on ABC, Lloyd in Space beat its initial ratings expectations, which prompted Disney to quickly order more episodes. The show was officially discontinued in 2004, though production had already stopped in 2003 after the One Saturday Morning block ended. Toon Disney aired reruns until October 23, 2006, after which it largely vanished from television and has stayed off both TV and digital platforms since.

Of the 40 episodes released across North America, Europe, and Asia, “Cheery Theerlap, Lloyd” never aired in Asia due to its religious-holiday satire, and Asia also skipped “Commander Lloyd,” “Day One,” “Go Crater Worms,” and “Ride Along.” Going the other way, “Picture Perfect” aired only in Asia and never reached North American audiences.

Lloyd in Space Characters

Lloyd in Space Characters

Lloyd Nebulon: The heart of the series, Lloyd is a teenage green-skinned Verdigrean with distinctive ears and a single antenna. Curious and well-meaning, he is forever caught up in typical teenage dilemmas, just with the added complications of intergalactic life.

Francine Nebulon: Lloyd’s younger sister, gifted with telekinesis and telepathy. She is clever and quick to use her psychic powers in a pinch. Like many little siblings in family cartoons, she gets on Lloyd’s nerves but ultimately shares a strong bond with him.

Commander Norah Li Nebulon: Mother to Lloyd and Francine, and head of the Intrepidville Space Station. A strong, authoritative figure, she balances running the station with raising her kids, often serving as Lloyd’s moral compass through his teenage troubles.

Eddie R. Horton: One of Lloyd’s closest friends, a cheerful red-haired human teen who is always there to back Lloyd up through his schemes and misadventures.

Kurt Blobberts: A lovable, massive one-eyed purple blob of the Blobullon species. Not the brightest of the bunch, but his loyalty and big heart make him essential to the group.

Douglas McNoggin: A sentient giant brain of the Cerebellian species. As you would guess, he is the brains of the operation, supplying logical solutions, though he faces the same teenage struggles as everyone else, proving smarts do not exempt you from growing pains.

Supporting Characters

Lloyd in Space Characters

Station: The sentient AI of the Intrepidville Space Station. He assists Commander Norah and keeps everything running, often providing comic relief while serving an essential role.

Mrs. Bolt: Lloyd’s robot teacher, stern and no-nonsense, big on discipline and academic rigor. Strict as she seems, her real focus is her students’ education and well-being.

Brittany: Lloyd’s crush and the school’s typical popular girl. Somewhat vain and occasionally stuck-up, she still has moments of real depth, and her interactions with Lloyd swing from indifference to genuine connection.

Dunkirque: Frequently at odds with Lloyd’s group, he serves as a recurring antagonist and, like Brittany, belongs to the “popular” clique at the space-station school.

Boomer: Another of Lloyd’s friends, Boomer hails from a gas-giant planet and wears a special suit to survive in non-gaseous environments.

Cindy: A pink, jellyfish-like alien classmate. She is one of Brittany’s friends and often gets swept up in the school’s social dynamics.

Larry: A floating brain and another classmate. Like Douglas, he is a Cerebellian, though he is not as close to Lloyd as Douglas is.
