The Disenchantment characters are some of Matt Groening’s most colorful creations, filling the 2018 Netflix series with drunken princesses, personal demons, lovesick elves, and scheming royals. Like Groening’s other landmark shows, The Simpsons and Futurama, Disenchantment runs on a deep and eccentric cast. In a conversation with Dan Hyman of Esquire, Groening said he began compiling a list of creatures as far back as 2012, jotting down “gnomes, fairies, imps, goblins, gremlins, trolls, elves, and dragons.” True to his word, Disenchantment brings that whole menagerie to life. Here is a guide to the standout characters, followed by the full voice cast.
Princess Tiabeanie ‘Bean’

🏰 Realm: Dreamland
🎭 Role: Crown princess and protagonist
🧠 My Take: A princess who would rather drink and brawl than be married off. Endlessly relatable.
The heart and soul of the show is Princess Tiabeanie, better known as Bean. She is no ordinary fairy-tale princess: stubborn, resilient, and frequently intoxicated, she is one of the most refreshing female Disenchantment characters on screen. Voiced by Abbi Jacobson, Bean blends rebelliousness, courage, and vulnerability, and her relentless pursuit of freedom against the confines of royal destiny drives much of the series. She basically personifies the messy struggle of growing up, which makes her both hilarious and easy to root for.
Elfo

🏰 Realm: Elfwood
🎭 Role: Bean’s elf companion
🧠 My Take: The cheerful innocent of the trio, and the one who keeps getting his heart broken.
Bean may be the central figure, but the show would be incomplete without the cheerful optimism of Elfo. Leaving his candy-coated home for adventure in Dreamland, Elfo embodies curiosity and resilience, and he is far more than a sidekick. From his unrequited love for Bean to his complicated search for his own identity, his arc makes him one of the most compelling characters in the series. His innocence is a perfect foil to Bean’s rebellious streak, and the dynamic between them is a delight.
Luci

🏰 Realm: Hell (sent to Dreamland)
🎭 Role: Bean’s personal demon
🧠 My Take: Pure chaos in a cat-shaped package, with a hidden soft spot.
If Elfo is innocence, Luci is the manifestation of chaos. A personal demon sent to corrupt Bean, he injects mischief and anarchy into every scene. Don’t let the cat-like demeanor fool you; Luci revels in disorder, which makes him the ideal partner-in-crime for Bean’s antics. Yet despite his demonic nature he shows surprising flashes of loyalty and care, and his sarcastic, cynical quips supply much of the show’s best humor.
Mora

🏰 Realm: Mermaid Island
🎭 Role: Mermaid and Bean’s love interest
🧠 My Take: A would-be actress whose big dream gets her stuck in a Freak Show tank.
The Queen of Mermaid Island raised a promising daughter in Mora, who nurtured a dream of becoming a famous actress and set off for Steamland to chase it. The dream hit a wall when producers rejected her for not being “human enough.” Undeterred, she lent her voice to a few cartoon characters, then ended up as an exhibit at P.T.’s Freak Show, living in a glass tank as the only known mermaid in human captivity.
Jasper

🏰 Realm: The forest near Dreamland
🎭 Role: Zøg’s secret young son
🧠 My Take: Raised like a bear cub, which explains a lot.
During her time at Dreamland Castle, Ursula conceived Jasper. After retreating to the forest, she kept her son’s existence a secret and raised him like a typical bear cub, a secret that held until a lonely Zøg sought her out. Despite spending time with Jasper, Zøg was initially reluctant to take responsibility, though he eventually relented and brought the boy back to Dreamland. Bean warmly welcomed Jasper, but Derek struggled to adjust, giving their relationship a rocky start.
King Zøg

🏰 Realm: Dreamland
🎭 Role: King and Bean’s father
🧠 My Take: A gruff tyrant who turns out to be the show’s most heartbreaking character.
Then there is King Zøg, Bean’s father: a complex figure, a gruff and authoritarian king with a genuine soft spot for his rebellious daughter. His flawed personality and clumsy attempts at fatherhood add real depth to the show. Beneath the hard-hearted-ruler exterior, Zøg evolves into a deeply vulnerable, emotionally complicated character, and his struggles with power, love, and family deliver some of the most surprising arcs in the series.
Queen Dagmar

🏰 Realm: Maru
🎭 Role: Bean’s mother and chief schemer
🧠 My Take: The series’ best villain, precisely because you keep wanting to trust her.
Cloaked in mystery, Queen Dagmar, Bean’s mother, is a standout. Introduced as a benevolent figure, her true nature unfolds across the series to reveal someone as cunning as she is enigmatic. Her sinister motivations keep audiences guessing, her manipulation of Bean ripples through the whole plot, and whether you read her as villain or victim, there is no denying she generates the show’s most compelling storylines.
Prince Derek

🏰 Realm: Dreamland
🎭 Role: Bean’s young half-brother
🧠 My Take: Sheltered and naive, but quietly sharper than anyone gives him credit for.
The youngest of the royal family, Prince Derek is more than a background figure. He offers a contrasting perspective to Bean’s chaotic life, embodying innocence and vulnerability amid the madness of Dreamland’s court. For all his naivety, Derek often shows wisdom beyond his years, becoming a surprisingly astute observer of family dynamics. As his role grows, viewers get to see a softer, different side of Dreamland royalty.
Sorcerio

🏰 Realm: Dreamland
🎭 Role: Court wizard
🧠 My Take: A royal sorcerer who is barely better at magic than the average peasant.
Sorcerio, the castle’s resident wizard, is a delightfully eccentric part of the roster. Despite his lofty title, he routinely falls short of any real magical ability, which turns him into a humorous and endearing source of comic relief. His determination to prove his powers usually ends in disaster, and his bumbling spells and interactions deliver some of the show’s most laugh-out-loud moments.
Oona

🏰 Realm: Dankmire
🎭 Role: Zøg’s second wife, Bean’s stepmother
🧠 My Take: A reptilian queen who comes into her own once she stops orbiting Zøg.
Oona, Zøg’s second wife and Bean’s stepmother, is a character who happily defies stereotypes. As a reptilian queen from a foreign land, she brings a unique flavor to the series. Though she first appears aloof and unapproachable, her development reveals a resilient, independent woman, and her journey toward forging her own path apart from Zøg makes her one of the most intriguing female characters in the show.
Turbish

🏰 Realm: Dreamland
🎭 Role: Knight of the Zøg Table
🧠 My Take: Not a good knight, but a reliably funny one.
Sir Turbish, a Knight of the Zøg Table, is usually found alongside his fellow knight Sir Mertz, though Pendergast doesn’t rate him highly. In one memorable incident, the giant Tess ate and then spat out his horse and saddle; in retaliation, and ironically just as Pendergast told him the horse had survived, Turbish shot Tess with a flaming arrow, which only sent her on a rampage.
Herald

🏰 Realm: Dreamland
🎭 Role: Royal announcer
🧠 My Take: A man with exactly one volume setting.
The Herald keeps an affiliation with Dreamland, serving under King Zøg by announcing arrivals, tracking time, and delivering the news, always at top volume. When Zøg’s mental stability began to slip, the Herald tried softly announcing Bean and Oona to avoid upsetting him, but once Zøg failed to hear the subdued version, frustration won out and he snapped right back to his usual booming proclamation.
Kissy the Elf

🏰 Realm: Elfwood
🎭 Role: Elf princess
🧠 My Take: Her name is the whole bit, and the bit works.
Kissy, the Elf King’s daughter, holds the rank of elf princess and, true to her name, has a real fondness for kissing. It becomes a running gag: when she challenges her father’s claim that he can kill anyone she kisses, his confident agreement sends every nearby elf nervously stepping back. Her father’s fiercely protective stance is played mostly for laughs.
Trixy

🏰 Realm: Trøgtown
🎭 Role: Trøg with a crush on Elfo
🧠 My Take: Assertive, and weirdly devoted to Elfo’s facial cavities.
Trixy, a female Trøg, strikes up a relationship with Elfo, drawn in by his “relatively small” facial cavities. Assertive from the start, she elbows her way between Elfo and two other admiring Trøgs during their obligatory midnight supper, then wins him over with a bowl of vinegar-and-mustard-soaked anchovies that he finds remarkably tasty. After dinner she surprises him by hanging from the ceiling of his sleep nook, hoping to get a little closer.
Prince Merkimer

🏰 Realm: Bentwood
🎭 Role: Pompous prince (later a pig)
🧠 My Take: Improbably more likable once he is stuck in a pig’s body.
Merkimer, the second Prince of Bentwood, set out to marry Princess Bean of Dreamland after his brother Guysbert’s infamous accident with the Iron Throne left him incapacitated. Things took a turn when Elfo, jealous of Merkimer, talked him into drinking a magic potion made of pig and elf blood, with consequences neither of them saw coming.
Stan the Executioner

🏰 Realm: Dreamland
🎭 Role: Royal executioner
🧠 My Take: Tortures people with golf jokes, which is somehow on-brand for this show.
Stan, a large-framed man, favors a shirtless look with teal pants, sandals, a black hood, and studded leather wristbands. He specializes in torture, sometimes tormenting victims by reading from a book of golf jokes, and he will happily attack people with chairs on command. His grim job gives him a fittingly dark sense of humor: when Bean can’t bring herself to execute Gwen, Stan immediately brands her a “failure,” “loser,” and “quitter,” though events later prove Bean was right to refuse.
Alva Gunderson

🏰 Realm: Steamland
🎭 Role: Industrialist and Steamland’s founder
🧠 My Take: A smooth-talking tycoon with an obvious hidden agenda.
Alva Gunderson, a citizen of Steamland and brother of Sky Gunderson, is credited as Steamland’s founder and heads the Gunderson Steamwork company. As the first to unlock the steam engine’s potential and the owner of the town’s largest company, he effectively holds the reins of Steamland. He hired the Arch-Druidess to lure Bean to Steamland, even handing her an expense account she was meant to track (and almost certainly didn’t), and when he finally met Bean, he disguised himself as an ordinary employee under the pseudonym Gordy Stewson.

How the Cast Created Their Voices
If you have ever wondered how this ensemble landed on those distinctive voices, the cast featurette above is a fun watch. As for the show itself, Disenchantment has since wrapped up: the fifth and final part premiered in 2023, bringing Dreamland’s long, strange saga to a close after four years on Netflix. Co-creator Josh Weinstein had teased its arrival on social media, and the finale gave Bean, Elfo, and Luci a proper sendoff.
