Anime About Ships: 13 Best Naval and Pirate Show

Author: Tyler B Updated: October 12, 2024
14.2K

Let’s talk anime about ships. One Piece. Space Battleship Yamato. Black Lagoon. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. KanColle. Arpeggio of Blue Steel. The “ship anime” subgenre covers more ground than you might think, from grand pirate adventures and gritty modern naval thrillers to time-travel WWII dramas and moe ship-girl franchises.

What unites them is the ship itself as the storytelling engine. A ship creates natural confinement, forces character interaction, and provides a moving setting that lets writers explore different worlds without losing narrative focus. Whether that ship is a pirate galleon, a submarine, a destroyer, a spaceship, or a giant sentient battleship who chose her own human captain, the format has produced some of anime’s most enduring classics.

In this post, I’m walking through my favorite anime involving ships, from massive pirate franchises to obscure naval dramas worth discovering.

The Best Anime About Ships

13
One Piece

One Piece - Inspiring Anime

The most famous ship anime ever made. Based on Eiichiro Oda‘s manga (launched 1997, still ongoing), the anime adaptation began in 1999 and has run for over 1,100 episodes. Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates sail the world aboard the Going Merry (and later the Thousand Sunny) in search of the legendary One Piece treasure that would crown Luffy the Pirate King.

The Going Merry’s sendoff in the Water 7 arc remains one of the most emotional moments in anime history. Netflix’s live-action adaptation launched in 2023 to surprising critical acclaim, with the second season currently in production. The pure essence of ship-based adventure storytelling.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Space Battleship Yamato 2199

A 2012-2013 modern remake of the legendary 1974 original Space Battleship Yamato by Leiji Matsumoto. The Yamato crew embarks on a 168,000 light-year journey to the planet Iscandar to retrieve technology that can save Earth from radioactive devastation.

The 2199 remake updates the visuals and pacing while preserving the original’s tone. It also spawned Yamato 2202 and Yamato 2205 sequel series. While set in space, Yamato is unapologetically a naval ship anime in spirit. The Yamato itself is modeled after the real WWII Japanese battleship of the same name.

11
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water

Nadia The Secret of Blue Water

A 1990-1991 classic from Gainax (the studio that would later make Evangelion), directed by Hideaki Anno. The series is loosely based on Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, following Nadia and Jean as they journey aboard Captain Nemo’s advanced submarine, the Nautilus, against the villainous Neo-Atlantis organization.

The Nautilus is one of anime’s most iconic ships. The series itself was a foundational influence on anime’s steampunk and adventure genres. Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) has been frequently compared to Nadia, though Disney has denied direct inspiration. Essential viewing.

10
Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon - anime liquor

A 2006 seinen anime based on Rei Hiroe‘s manga. Set in the lawless Southeast Asian city of Roanapur, the show follows the crew of the Black Lagoon, a modern-day pirate mercenary ship that performs illegal cargo runs. Salaryman Rokuro Okajima is kidnapped during a job and ends up joining the crew as “Rock,” learning to navigate a brutal underworld of arms dealers, hitmen, and crime syndicates.

The 2006-2011 anime (two TV seasons plus the Roberta’s Blood Trail OVAs) is widely considered one of the best modern action anime. The boat itself, a converted PT torpedo boat, becomes a character in its own right. Revy’s gunfights remain some of the best action choreography in the medium.

9
Arpeggio of Blue Steel

Arpeggio of Blue Steel

A 2013 CGI anime based on Ark Performance‘s manga. In a near-future where rising sea levels have submerged most of Earth, humanity faces the Fleet of Fog, a mysterious force of sentient battleships. The protagonist Gunzou Chihaya commands a defector submarine named I-401 whose “mental model” (a humanoid avatar named Iona) chose him as her captain.

The full-CGI animation was controversial at release but has aged well. The ship-girl “mental model” concept is one of the most distinctive in the entire ship anime genre. The series and its sequel film Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova DC have a devoted following.

8
KanColle: Kantai Collection

KanColle Kantai Collection

A 2015 anime adaptation of the massively popular browser game Kantai Collection by Kadokawa. The game personifies World War II warships as moe anime girls (ship girls or kanmusu) who fight the mysterious Abyssal Fleet. The anime follows the destroyer Fubuki as she joins a fleet of fellow ship girls.

The franchise is one of the most successful “ship girl” intellectual properties in Japan, with massive merchandise sales, multiple games, and a 2016 film. The 2022 KanColle: Let’s Meet at Sea sequel series continued the story. A foundational entry in the ship girl subgenre.

7
High School Fleet

High School Fleet

A 2016 anime by Production IMS that combines moe slice-of-life with serious naval combat. Akeno Misaki and her classmates at the Yokosuka Girls’ Marine High School operate the destroyer Harekaze as part of their training to become “Blue Mermaids,” elite female sailors.

The premise sounds light, but the show takes naval tactics seriously, with detailed depictions of destroyer operations. The 2020 follow-up film High School Fleet: The Movie continued the story. Often compared to Girls und Panzer for its “girls operating military equipment” premise.

6
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

A 2013 mecha anime by Production I.G, written by Gen Urobuchi (Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass). Space soldier Ledo crash-lands on a future Earth completely submerged in water, where humans live on the massive scavenger fleet known as Gargantia.

The series uses its ship-fleet setting to explore themes of cultural conflict, militarism vs peace, and the value of slow-paced life. Urobuchi’s writing is sharp and surprisingly hopeful for him. The Gargantia fleet itself is one of the most beautifully realized ship designs in modern anime.

5
Blue Submarine No.6

Blue Submarine No.6

A 1998-2000 OVA series by Gonzo, based on Satoru Ozawa’s manga. In a flooded post-apocalyptic Earth, the crew of the experimental submarine Blue Submarine No.6 battles against Zorndyke, a brilliant scientist who has created an army of marine creatures to wipe out humanity.

One of the earliest anime to extensively use CGI alongside traditional animation, the show was a technical landmark at release. The pacing is deliberate, the themes are philosophical, and the underwater battles are stunning. A cult classic among ship anime fans.

4
Zipang

Zipang

A 2004-2005 anime based on Kaiji Kawaguchi‘s acclaimed manga. The modern Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis cruiser Mirai is mysteriously transported back to 1942 during the Battle of Midway. The crew must decide whether to intervene in WWII or maintain neutrality, knowing their advanced technology could change history.

A thoughtful military anime that takes naval combat and ethical complexity seriously. The show was acclaimed for its detailed depiction of both modern and WWII-era naval operations. A standout for military and history buffs.

3
Fena: Pirate Princess

Fena Pirate Princess

A 2021 Production I.G original anime that aired on Crunchyroll and Adult Swim’s Toonami block. Fena Houtman, a young orphan girl, escapes captivity and joins a crew of samurai pirates aboard the Bonito on a quest to discover her lineage and a legendary treasure.

The series was a deliberate East-meets-West production, blending Japanese animation with American storytelling sensibilities for international audiences. Twelve episodes, beautifully animated, with stunning ocean visuals. Underrated and worth seeking out.

2
Jormungand

Jormungand

A 2012 action anime based on Keitaro Takahashi‘s manga. Child soldier Jonah works as a bodyguard for Koko Hekmatyar, a cheerful international arms dealer who claims her ultimate goal is achieving world peace through her morally complicated business.

Worth noting: while the original list framed this as a “warship-focused anime,” Jormungand is really more about Koko’s international arms dealing operations than naval warfare specifically. Ships do appear in some arcs (notably the maritime episodes), but it’s not strictly a ship anime. Still excellent action storytelling for fans who can enjoy the broader military thriller angle.

1
Full Ahead! Coco

Full Ahead! Coco

A 1990s pirate manga by Yoichi Amano that received an OVA adaptation. The story follows young Coco Felkena, who joins the crew of the pirate ship Sword Oratoria in search of treasure and adventure. The manga ran for 30 volumes from 1997 to 2010.

A deep cut in the ship anime category. The anime adaptation is hard to find legally outside Japan, but the manga is well-regarded among pirate adventure fans. Worth mentioning for completionists seeking obscure ship anime to track down.

What Makes a Great Ship Anime

The ship anime subgenre works because ships create natural storytelling constraints that focus narratives. Here’s what the best entries in the genre tend to have in common:

  • ✅ The ship is a character: the best ship anime make the vessel itself feel meaningful. The Going Merry in One Piece, the Yamato, the Nautilus, the Black Lagoon, the Harekaze. Each is iconic in its own right.
  • 💡 Crew dynamics are the engine: a ship is a confined space where characters can’t easily escape each other. This forces interpersonal storytelling that wouldn’t work in more open settings.
  • 🔥 Setting variety: ships move. This lets writers explore different islands, ports, cultures, time periods, and even planets without losing the show’s home base.
  • ✅ Specific worldbuilding: the best ship anime treat naval operations with detail and respect. Knot speeds, sail configurations, naval tactics, ship roles. The realism makes the fantasy elements land harder.
  • 💡 Tonal range: the genre stretches from grim modern action (Black Lagoon) to gentle slice-of-life (High School Fleet) to over-the-top adventure (One Piece). A ship setting can support almost any tone.
  • 🔥 Cross-genre potential: ship anime combines well with sci-fi (Yamato), fantasy (One Piece), military thriller (Zipang), slice-of-life (Aria), and steampunk (Nadia). Almost any genre pairs with seafaring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best ship anime to start with?

For pure spectacle and adventure, One Piece is the gold standard (though the length is intimidating). For a more contained experience, Black Lagoon is two seasons of perfect modern naval action. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water is the foundational steampunk-adventure ship anime worth seeing.

What’s the longest-running ship anime?

One Piece by a massive margin. The anime began in 1999 and has produced over 1,100 episodes as of 2026, with no end in sight. The franchise also includes 15+ feature films, multiple TV specials, and the 2023 Netflix live-action adaptation.

Are there anime where the ship itself is a character?

Yes. Arpeggio of Blue Steel goes furthest with this concept (the ships are literally sentient with humanoid “mental model” avatars). KanColle personifies entire WWII fleets as anime girls. Space Battleship Yamato treats the Yamato as a quasi-sacred vessel with its own narrative weight.

What’s the best naval combat anime?

For serious naval combat, Zipang is the most detailed and grounded. Arpeggio of Blue Steel has the most spectacular ship-vs-ship battles. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 delivers the most epic space-naval combat. Black Lagoon has the best modern small-boat action.

Is One Piece worth starting in 2026?

Yes, though strategically. The 1999-onward anime has pacing issues in some arcs. Many newer fans start with the manga (which is much faster), or use a popular Reddit/community filler-skip guide for the anime. The recent One Piece (Netflix live-action, 2023) is also a viable entry point that condenses the early arcs into 8 episodes.

What’s a ship girl anime?

“Ship girl” anime personifies warships as anime girls. The major examples are KanColle: Kantai Collection, Azur Lane (2019 anime), High School Fleet, and Arpeggio of Blue Steel‘s “mental model” concept. The subgenre has a massive dedicated fanbase in Japan and worldwide.

Where can I watch these anime?

Most are on Crunchyroll (One Piece, Arpeggio of Blue Steel, High School Fleet, Fena, Jormungand). Black Lagoon rotates between platforms but is generally on Funimation/Crunchyroll. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is on Crunchyroll. Older titles like Nadia and Blue Submarine No.6 require physical releases or specific platforms.

What’s the difference between a pirate anime and a naval anime?

Pirate anime (One Piece, Fena, Full Ahead! Coco) focus on outlaw ships and treasure-hunting adventures. Naval anime (Zipang, High School Fleet, Yamato) focus on official military or quasi-military operations. Both can feature ship combat, but the protagonist’s relationship to authority differs significantly.
